Jason Kidd looked like he was a couple signatures away from being traded to the Dallas Mavericks early Wednesday afternoon. About 5 hours later, the deal had fallen apart. Not because the sources were bad, or a GM decided the trade wasn't fair, but because of a veteran player named Devan George, had exercised the rare provision in his one year deal with the Mavs. This provision, called, "Early Bird Rights", is made possible by being in his second year on a second contracts with the Mavericks. The trade that has been put on hold, would have sent point guard Jason Kidd, and power forward Malik Allen to the Dallas Mavericks. In return, Dallas would trade guard Devin Harris, center DeSagana Diop, guard-forward Jerry Stackhouse, forward Devan George, guard Maurice Ager, 2 first round draft picks(2008 and 2010 picks), and cash to the Nets. Obviously, George did not like this deal, and used his veto power, to keep him on the championship contending Dallas Mavericks. Not only could other west teams such as the Lakers, Phoenix, San Antonio, and New Orleans breathe after hearing the fallout of this trade, but it gives the Cleveland Cavaliers' management another chance to make their young superstar (LeBron James) happy, by possibly swinging a deal for the All-Star point guard.
Adding Kidd, the 9 time All-Star to their team, would certainly help the Mavericks keep up with the west powers, such as the Lakers, Phoenix, San Antonio, and New Orleans. Kidd would provide Dallas with tons of leadership, playoff and finals experience, and he would help out their rebounding tremendously, because the Mavs leading rebounder, Nowitzki, a legit 7 footer, can't even pull down 9 rebounds per game. Kidd would also bring a nice defensive presence to the Mavericks that only a few players on the Mavs bring. Overall, trade could be good for both teams, or it could screw both teams. We'll see what happens in the upcoming days between Dallas and New Jersey, and possibly Cleveland.
